Position Summary:
The purpose of this role is to lead, manage and deploy the Health, Environmental and Safety Strategies within multi plant operations by utilizing EH&S data to help better understand the condition of our Safety Program. In concert with the Operations Leaders, develop and deploy Annual Safety & Health Plans with a focus on Employee Engagement, Auditing, and Continuous Improvement processes.
Coordinates, develops, and implements site safety and environmental programs to ensure continuous improvement, regulatory compliance, and alignment with operations objectives and Enterprise Safety/Health and Environmental Services guidelines. Under site leader direction and guidance from Enterprise Safety and Environmental Services, manages projects and programs tied to the annual plan that leads to successful site safety and environmental performance outcomes, including reduced work-related injuries/illnesses and associated costs, and environmental compliance metrics. Also provides oversight of staff and site program execution in 1-2 other areas such as Environmental, Health Services, or Workers Comp admin (area of supervision may vary by site).
Position Responsibilities:
- Supervise staff in related functional area that may include Environmental, Health Services, or Workers Comp (specific area supervised may vary by site). Ensures site-specific compliance activities are being met in partnership with Enterprise-level functional leadership and support staff (e.g., Corporate Disability Management, Enterprise Safety and Environmental), set schedules, assign work, and monitor performance. Ensure that direct reports have the knowledge, skills, and resources necessary to perform their jobs. Responsible for performance management and development of assigned team. Leads efforts to build and sustain a behavior-based safety culture.
- Oversee and/or conduct site specific safety and environmental training programs (e.g. incident investigation, lockout/tagout, powered industrial trucks, ergonomics, safety inspections, Job Safety Analysis, audiometric testing, hazardous waste, stormwater, air compliance, spill response etc.) as necessary and/or as directed by Enterprise Safety. This includes new associate orientations aimed at reducing exposure to workplace hazards and compliance with applicable standards.
- Build, coach and develop a highly effective team of Safety Specialists, Technicians and Occupational Health Specialists with a clear focus on Hazard Elimination, Incident Reduction and Behavior Management.
- Partner with organizations to ensure that all employees have access to preventative/proactive occupational health care.
- Support and lead the Occupational Health Specialists and First Responders in an effort to assure that all employees have the appropriate level of service in the event of needed first aid, health condition attention, first report of injury, etc.
- Collaborate and Partner with Plant Manager(s), Manufacturing Operations Managers, and other Functional Managers in strategic planning. Drive process improvement activities to maximize the team's effectiveness in achieving the operational objectives and milestones as well as ensuring all corporate policies are deployed.
- Partner with corporate functional leadership (i.e. Corporate Safety) and counterparts in other plants, utilizing best-practice sharing, to deliver the highest level of value. Ensure development and compliance with corporate policies and procedures.
- Provide Safety leadership on the Plant Leadership Team, assuring that all policies & procedures are being adhered to, audited, corrective actions identified and completed in a timely manner. Provide support in pulling in appropriate resources when necessary.
- Manage actions directed toward injury prevention, incident rate, lost work day rate, workers compensation costs and overall progress towards achieving a World Class Safety Culture
- Responsible for compliance activities including records documentation, generating regulatory reports and performing inspections. Assure environmental programs remain compliant with regulatory and EMS (Environmental Management System) requirements.
Qualifications & Skills:
- Bachelors degree or equivalent experience in Safety, Engineering, Environmental Management required. Masters degree in Environmental Health and Safety preferred
- Minimum of 5 years of Safety Management experience supporting a large site (700 people or larger) with multiple locations.
- Must be able to develop, deploy and improve Safety System concepts, techniques, and standards while influencing and supporting Operations Leadership teams.
- Well-versed in Safety Committee processes and methodologies with the ability to adapt accordingly to the needs of the business. Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Experience managing a team of Site Safety Specialists, Safety Technicians and Occupational Health Specialists
- Demonstrated ability to manage/influence leaders and teams across multiple locations and drive performance results. Demonstrated ability to prepare and present to all levels of the organization.
- Experience managing in matrixed organization.
- Technical knowledge/experience of OSHA, NFPA, NEC, ANSI code regulations and compliance
- Minimum of 3+ years of formal leadership experience managing direct reports
- Experience leading behavior based safety programs
