The Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) is a non-profit, bipartisan public policy organization established in 1962 to provide strategic insights and practical policy solutions to decision makers concerned with global security and prosperity. Over the years, it has grown to be one of the largest organizations of its kind, with a staff of some 200 employees, including more than 120 analysts working to address the changing dynamics of international security across the globe.


The Freeman Chair in China Studies at CSIS is seeking several part-time or full-time interns who can provide dedicated support for research on China’s domestic political system and foreign policy during the period from September 7, 2020 to December 14, 2020. This position is unpaid.


The Freeman Chair is a leading source of insight and analysis on China’s evolving political system and the dynamics that impact its domestic policy agenda and external behavior. Our work focuses on five key areas: leadership politics, policy- and decision-making, Party-state governance, political discourse and the role of ideology, and sources of political stability and risk. An ideal candidate will have substantive knowledge on contemporary Chinese politics and economics, and familiarity with how to find and analyze primary Chinese documents. Because of the fast-paced work environment, interns should be motivated self-starters that are able to engage in a wide variety of analytic and logistical tasks. Responsibilities include:

• Assisting in research, analysis, and writing for articles, event summaries, and other such projects as dictated by program needs
• Monitoring Chinese language media sources and reports
• Providing logistical and administrative support for ongoing programs and projects
• Assisting in event planning and staffing
• Performing a variety of other duties as assigned


• Current undergraduate seniors, graduate students, and recent graduates. Applicants currently enrolled in or those that have recently completed a master’s degree are preferred.
• Must have at least a 3.0 GPA (on a 4.0 scale) from an accredited U.S. institution or equivalent from a non-U.S. institution
• Must be eligible to work in the United States
• Must have superior research, analysis, and writing skills
• Must demonstrate academic/professional background in Chinese domestic politics
• Must have advanced Chinese language reading and research skills
• Must have superior communication and interpersonal skills
• Must have the ability to manage competing priorities and multiple projects under tight deadlines
• Prior working or study experience in China is preferred
