Organization Summary
The National Council for Behavioral Health is the unifying voice of America's mental health and addictions service and treatment organizations. For over 10 years, the National Council has offered internship opportunities to young people and students of all ages who have an interest in applying their passion, education and skillset to projects at a national association focused on mental health and addictions. The National Council's internship program brings together interns from various disciplines to professionally develop together under the auspices of the Business & Strategy Department, while being tasked out to specific departments of the organization to integrate into project teams and complete various projects and initiatives.

Responsibilities
The Intern, Business & Strategy, will work directly with the Manager, Business & Strategy to conduct research, create written products, and contribute to departmental initiatives in support of the National Council's growth priorities. External relationship management with funders and business contacts; proposal submissions; special programmatic projects all fall within the purview of the Business & Strategy Department and as such, the intern will complete tasks across these activities, as needed. We seek an individual with passion for the work of the National Council and an interest to learn, knowing that many candidates may not have direct experience in the work of this department.

Responsibilities include:
  • Attend staff engagement activities, including: department meetings and all-staff meetings.
  • Researching funding opportunities aligned with National Council interests; participating in early decision-making in support of proposal development.
  • Developing project summaries to send to philanthropy contacts.
  • Support internal-facing projects focused on improving our business development operations.
  • Contribute to strategy discussions related to growth opportunities for the National Council.
  • Participate in professional development opportunities organized for interns, such as virtual meet-ups with organizational leadership, journal club, peer networking, and other professional development opportunities.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • In order to be eligible to apply, applicants must demonstrate strong analytical, writing, and research skills. Interested individuals must have basic knowledge in at least one of the following areas:
  • Mental illness and addictions
  • Public health
  • Public policy
  • Delivery of health care services
  • Business

Required Qualifications
The National Council welcomes applicants with the following profiles:
  • Undergraduate students who have completed at least two years of study by the start of the internship and have relevant education and work experience in a related field.
  • Recent undergraduates who have completed an undergraduate degree within 6 months of the internship start date.
  • Graduate students or individuals who have recently completed their graduate education (in the past year) in business; industrial engineering; policy administration; social work or other clinical specialties; public health; or related field.
