Job Description

The Cultural Communication Educator is a grant funded position which will work with the University Health Care System and the diverse communities we serve to design, develop, and implement a training curriculum for cultural, social and anti-racism training bringing together the creative arts, drama, applied theatre, social arts, and the variety of life experiences and collective intelligence of a multidisciplinary team that includes internal and external partners. The Cultural Communication Educator provides instruction in the areas of cultural awareness, anti-racism, implicit bias and racial equity. This includes planning, organizing and developing the curriculum, training materials, testing, evaluation procedures, multimedia, and visual aids to offer experiential workshops to University Health workforce members and the communities we serve. We encourage applications from BIPOC individuals. Experience and knowledge of cultural differences, BIPOC, and immigrant and refugee, communities preferred.

  • Develops cultural and anti-racist curriculum braiding the arts and applied theatre for University Health workforce members and the communities we serve, working together with cultural health navigators, medical interpreters, clinicians and other members of the healthcare team to develop a program and curriculum based on our communities' needs. Provides instruction/facilitation in accordance with the established curriculum outlines and class schedules. Develops and delivers classes and training workshops.

  • Motivates students to actively participate in all aspects of the learning and discovery process and provides continual feedback, mentoring, and various methods of assessment measurement by ensuring student mastery of learning outcomes.

  • Records attendance and assesses and records grading for all activities, homework assignments, quizzes, and tests.

  • Assists with course/program evaluation and continuous improvement and maintains acceptable program quality and satisfaction scores. Keeps program manager informed of any curriculum or student code of conduct issues.

  • Plans, organizes, and develops training materials, testing, evaluation procedures, multimedia, and visual aids.

  • Participates in marketing of courses to prospective students, organizes events and recruits attendees. Effectively uses organizational and planning skills with attention to detail and follow through. Handles all logistics required to organize course, including class scheduling, class enrollment, set up, and pre- testing.

  • Identifies and recruits subject matter experts who will serve as guest lecturers/facilitators/performers.

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent in combination of education and experience.

  • Five years of healthcare experience. Medical interpretation experience preferred.

  • Excellent communication skills, including cross-cultural and intercultural communication.

  • Training in the arts, storytelling, theatre, applied drama, and the social arts preferred.

  • Expertise in curriculum development and education program management.

  • Must be comfortable with teaching in classroom, virtually and proficient on distance-learning platforms such as zoom.

  • Knowledge, experience, and passion for applied theatre/social arts/drama, as well as health care social change and advocacy.

  • Ability to think creatively and outside of the box, implementing new and innovative curriculum, programs and events to achieve collaborative community goals.

  • Experience implementing programs/producing events working within communities using the creative arts, poetry, storytelling, applied theater, social arts, for healing, social change and advocating for policy change.

  • Has knowledge and understanding of effective instructional strategies, classroom management, and learning assessments.

  • Excellent interpersonal, initiative, teamwork, problem solving, independent judgment, organization, communication (verbal and written), time management, project management and presentation skills

  • Proficient with computer applications and programs associated with the position i.e. Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint)

  • Strong attention to detail and follow through skills

  • Strong customer service skills and phone and e-mail etiquette

  • Passion for teaching and communicating with persons from diverse cultural, social, and ethnic backgrounds
