Overview

UnityPoint Health- Marshalltown

Full-time (32 hours); 4 days per week with M-F call obligation; 8 hour day shifts

Collaborates with nursing leadership and education professionals to organize, implement, and evaluate education programs (orientation, in-services, competencies, classroom, etc.) to facilitate skill development, competency, and proficiency in standards of care for perioperative services, perioperative leadership, clinical staff, and patients. As a member of the interdisciplinary team, contributes professional nursing knowledge and skills in the provision and management of care to patients and their families. Maintains a practice environment that reflects the ANA Code for Nurses, Philosophy of Nursing at UnityPoint Health within the structure of the Professional Nurse Practice Model and in collaboration with other care givers.

Responsibilities

Subject matter expert in perioperative services, including, but not limited to: Association of Perioperative Registered Nurses standards (AORN), Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), accreditation agencies, and all other patient safety standards as they relate to the operating room.

Participates in hospital and departmental committees related to infection prevention, tissue safety, radiation safety and fire safety.

Serves as the administrator for surgical services electronic educational platform.

Delivers high quality care utilizing the nursing process while demonstrating knowledge and clinical skills of the specialty required on assigned unit in accordance with established policies, procedures, and standards of care.

Delegates and provides direction for other healthcare providers and holds them accountable for their involvement in the plan of care.

Utilizes critical thinking in making independent judgments and maintains responsibility and accountability for the knowledge of conditions of assigned patients. Assesses the needs of patients and families, providing appropriate teaching and making the necessary referrals to provide continuity of care.

Plans, organizes, and facilitates ongoing education and competency for team members; will assess educational needs of perioperative team members.

Assists in the development, implementation and evaluation of in-services, educational offerings, and competencies by using formal and informal teaching methods.

Assists leadership in facilitating clinical orientation for new team members; may provide at-the-elbow support as requested or collaborate with preceptors and unit leadership to establish action plans for orientees who are struggling.

Mentors less experienced team members; guides professional behaviors while adhering to the policies and procedures of the organization.

Demonstrates knowledge that patient and workplace safety is a priority by preventing errors, accidents and infections and reporting potential or actual concerns immediately.

Collaborates with leadership to support implementation of evidenced based practice into the department setting.

Serves as a change agent to support implementation and compliance.


Qualifications

Diploma or Associates Degree in Nursing.

Bachelor of Science in Nursing, currently enrolled in RN to Bachelor of Science in Nursing program with completion within two years of hire date or Master's degree in nursing or related field preferred.

Minimum three years of operating room experience as a registered nurse.

Proven teaching expertise preferred.

Iowa Registered Nurse license.

Certified Nurse Operating Room within one year of hire.

Self-motivated, able to work independently with little oversight.

Demonstrates effective decision-making and problem-solving skills, flexibility, and the ability to take a leadership role in facilitating organizational change through partnerships with staff and managers.

Writes, reads, comprehends and speaks fluent English.

Basic computer knowledge using word processing, spreadsheet, email, and web browser

Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Excellent interpersonal skills.

Manage priorities and deadlines.

Demonstrates the knowledge that patient and workplace safety is a priority by preventing errors, accidents and infections and reporting potential or actual concerns immediately.

Demonstrated knowledge of clinical skills related to patient safety in the operating room.
