Summary

Responsible for placing animals in adoptive homes via responsible matchmaking, counseling, and by providing exceptional customer service to prospective adopters.

Salary: $17.03 - $21.80/depending on qualifications

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assist prospective clients in the selection of animals for foster/adoption and in the preparation of paperwork.

  • Remain up to date on animal inventory to be able to match animals with appropriate owners.

  • Provide the required counseling, resources, and relevant information about animals to adopters.

  • Ensure all animals being adopted are up to date on vaccinations, preventions, and that any current medications are filled and provided.

  • Maintain up-to-date and accurate signage on adoption pods and in adoption folders.

  • Assist in taking photographs and writing bios for animals available for adoption and uploading to the shelter database.

  • Manage Adoptions e-mail inboxes and phone lines to answer questions about available animals, schedule meet & greets, and provide support.

  • Assist in the preparation of marketing materials, newsletters, and e-mail blasts for the Adoption programs.

  • Report observed health or behavior issues to appropriate department using established procedures.

  • Clean assigned areas on a daily basis and proactively maintain cleanliness of animals' pods and public areas during adoption hours.

  • Provide information to the public about Garland Animal Services programs and promote good animal care and responsible pet ownership.

  • Advise new owners of pet examinations, adoption benefits, policies and procedures.

  • Maintain database by entering accurate information on adopters, and adoptable animals.

  • Collect and maintain accurate record of payments for adoptions, donations, and merchandise.

  • Protect the confidential information on customers and donors.

  • Assist with animal care duties as needed.

  • Keep current inventory of necessary program supplies and report shortages to supervisor.

  • Maintain assigned equipment, supplies and vehicles in safe condition and report any problems or needed repairs to supervisor.

  • Represent Garland Animal Services by providing excellent customer service and focus.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED)

  • Must have animal handling and training experience.

  • Must be able to work with cats, dogs, and other pet species.

Or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential functions of the job.

Preferred Qualifications

Education/ Experience:

  • Education or courses in animal behavior and training principles

  • At least 3 years' experience of animal handling and training, preferably in a shelter environment.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Intermediate computer skills in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word)

  • Strong understanding of animal behavior and training principals

  • Knowledge of city ordinances and state laws as it relates to animal control

  • Must demonstrate professionalism on and off the job.

  • Must be organized and able to work independently.

  • Must have good people skills as well as coaching and training skills

  • Ability to prioritize and manage workload

Licenses and Certifications

  • Valid Class C Texas driver's license

  • Certification from IAABC, CCPDT, or other relevant animal behavior certifying organization.

Physical Requirements / Work Environment

Physical Demands

  • The position is regularly required to use hands and fingers, to talk and hear, to stand, walk, sit, reach with hands and arms, and stoop, kneel and crouch. The position holder must be able to regularly lift (and/or) move up to 50 pounds.

  • Specific vision abilities required for this position include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to focus.

  • While performing the duties of this job this position may be exposed to odors and airborne particles. The noise level in the work environments are normally moderate but may occasionally be high.

Working Conditions

  • The individual performing this job may be required to work more than 8 hours in a day or more than 40 hours in a week.

  • The job may require adjusting work hours within a typical work week to accommodate training schedule.

  • The job requires driving to different training locations.
